Prior to being dubbed the Trojans in 1912, USC athletic teams were known as the Methodists (or “Fighting Methodists”) and the Wesleyans. Travel restrictions and the scarcity of major football-playing colleges on the West Coast limited its early rivalries to local Southern Californian colleges and universities. During this time, USC faced Occidental, Caltech, Whittier, Pomona, and Loyola on a regular basis. On November 4, 1905, the first USC team to play outside of Southern California travelled to Stanford University, where they were thrashed 16-0 by the traditional West Coast powerhouse.

While the teams would not meet again until 1918 (Stanford had switched from football to rugby union in the interim), this was USC’s first game against a future Pac-12 conference opponent and the start of its oldest rivalry. USC also played its first games against future Pac-12 rivals such as Oregon State (1914), California (1915), Oregon (1915), Arizona (1916), and Utah during this time period (1915-1917, 1919).

Between 1911 and 1913, USC, like California and Stanford, abandoned football in favour of rugby union. The results were disastrous, as USC football was soundly defeated by more experienced programmes while the school itself suffered financial setbacks; it was during this period that Owen R.
